Every month, millions turn to Canva as their starting point—to build a brand, grow a following, inspire a classroom, streamline their workflow, or simply share something meaningful. As more people discovered the power of design, Canva’s template marketplace grew rapidly, expanding into new markets and unlocking even more use cases.

This added pressure stalled growth for one of Canva's most important growth channels. Many users were confused about the design categories Canva offered, and a significant proportion didn’t explore our template library when creating new designs—missing out on one of Canva’s most valuable propositions!

As the design lead for the group, I partnered with stakeholders across product, engineering, growth and content teams to deliver a discovery experience worthy of the world’s best design platform;

  • Personalised recommendations that keep users coming back more often;

  • Powerful search to find the best and most relevant templates, faster;

  • A flexible taxonomy that scales with our content and growth strategy;

  • Curated campaigns and collections to help users discover new and trending content;

  • A growing creator program to empower our creative community to earn from their designs;

  • Inspiring design previews to support our print commerce experience.

The previous Discover page was rigid and not personalised, which led to low engagement rates for many user segments. One of the biggest challenges for the redesign was balancing SEO, brand, and personalization within a single feed. With the redesign, users can now find personalized recommendations that fit their style and use case. Suggested searches and curated categories also highlight new trends and seasonal content, making it easier to discover fresh inspiration.
